social distancing {week two ~ new baking skills, PE with Joe & "stay at home" orders}

And so it continues.

The week started innocently enough.  We had a several hour family baseball game that members floated in and out of.  Music was playing and for a while it felt like just a "regular" weekend afternoon.

Sunday morning church was broadcast over YouTube and we all enjoyed a long afternoon walk.

Monday though brought grey skies, a chilly rain, and the news that the school closure had been extended from the initial two weeks until May 15.  While I love having the kids home, I'll admit to having a moment that it was difficult to breathe as I began to process that news.  The kids took the news in varying degrees, some cheering, others openmouthed trying to wrap their minds around it, and genuine tears from others.

tears from this one, followed by a nap.  I think he just needed to give himself time to come to grips with the thought of no school for such a long time

Ky continued baking up delicious treats, this week mastering a custard tart which turned out delightfully delicious!

Amber seems to be confused about why so many of us are home all the time.  I think she likes it, but she's pretty tired by the end of the day with all the walks she's getting.  I walk her in the mornings, Ky takes her at least once a day to get some "me" time and Ian and I tend to take a long walk with her later in the afternoon.  When we end up walking together as a family after dinner she sometimes looks at us like we're crazy.

Overcast cool weather made the beginning of the week dreary and tough to feel motivated.  Poor D lived for his teacher's daily challenge math problems, eagerly solving and writing a long explanation of his thinking to his teacher each day.  Aside from those though, this week he was somewhat  aimless and spent a good bit of time napping.

Kylie focused her energy on trying new baking techniques and turned her sights on making bread.  Mom baked our bread for a long while when I was growing up, but I had never tried.  Therefore I was almost as excited as her when a bowl of flour, some water, olive oil a bit of yeast and the sugar to feed it transformed into some yummy loaves.   We may never buy bread again!

Nicholas's teacher sent some links to interesting websites as well as PE with Joe.  With the weather not being super this week, we decided to give it a go for some PE/recess time.  Our living room is not quite big enough for all eight of us...with the dog getting riled up at our sides...to exercise at the same time.  We were laughing as we bumped into each other and over our solidarity of wanting to punch Joe in the particularly difficult exercise sets.

Darcy continued to work on her sketching this week.  Kills me that she isn't interested in taking art class at school...  She currently thinks she may want to go into archeology but work in graphic design to make sure she can pay her bills.  So there's hope that her artistic skills may be put to use in the long run!

At least we ended on a positive note.  After a dreary weather week, we were blessed with the return of warmth and sun today.  To celebrate a week well done, we broke into the popsicle supply.  Nothing like a little taste of summer to lift spirits!

Today at 5 our county entered "stay at home" orders.  Monday it becomes official for the entire state.  Combined with the whole school is on hiatus until May 15, these are strange times indeed.  It's unclear what "distance learning" is going to look like, but we'll take that challenge on as it comes. For now we'll just keep on keeping on and look for creative ways to pass our extended time at home together.
