Faces on pumpkins?

Darcy already talks about Christmas trees, presents, and Santa.  She seems to understand the excitement about the upcoming winter holiday season.  But fall holidays?

Not so much...

If she didn't think I was crazy last Wednesday when I tried to get her to pick out a pumpkin, then I'm certain that she thought her daddy had lost his mind when he opened up her pumpkin and explained to her that she needed to start getting the seeds out.  She did what she always does when she is unsure how to take an event.

Watch to see how her siblings react of course!

now my big girl is totally into gutting a pumpkin

messy?  no problem for this one
Darcy also looked to her brother for confirmation.

what she didn't notice here is that he's grinding his teeth...
And when she saw that they both survived sticking their hands into their pumpkins, she took a deep breath, plastered on a smile, and decided to give it a try.

my take on her thoughts?  "my family is CRAZY but I'll give this pumpkin thing a try."

"Ewww, GROSS!"
And that moment was almost the end of Darcy's (and Caleb's for that matter) pumpkin experience.  Thank goodness Daddy thought to encourage them to try scooping with a spoon!

No spoon necessary of course for Ky...

After all the seeds and strings and slime were gone from the pumpkins, it was time to transfer the designs from paper.  We taped their selected faces onto their pumpkins and gave them each a finishing nail to poke holes along the outline.

Next they not so patiently waited for Daddy to use a knife to cut out the faces.  And then finally it was time for the lighting.

I think they turned out rather cute, but of course the addition of models make them even cuter!

With her reaction to what we did with pumpkins at the end of October, wonder what she's gonna think of turkeys in November?

Gulp....the thought of what you're going to do to a turkey's innards....

:)

Very adorable pumpkins and more adorable children! Darcy cracks me up with her "okay if you say so" attitude!

Don't you just love this season? I think it makes it even more special to see it through the eyes of our children who have never experienced these holidays before! So fun!

Very cool pumpkins and super cute kiddos!
Pumpkin carving has come a long way since I was little and my dad used his pocket knife.
Those little pumpkin knife "saws" are genius!

Cool pumpkins! I like the enthusiasm. I haven't carved pumpkins in a very long time! Glad you all had fun, you and Ian should have done one!

I guess if you think of it from Darcy's perspective, it is quite an odd tradition! :) I'm proud of you all for cleaning out the goop too! I didn't do that when I was your age...

Great looking jack-o-lanterns! It is a strange custom when you really think about it. So glad that Darcy is here to participate this year.

Darcy, you were very brave to stick your hands into the middle of that pumpkin. All three pumpkins are wonderful. I'm proud of you, Kylie, Caleb and Darcy.
