My little hero

My darling son is a creature of habit.  He likes to sleep in HIS bed (yes, he did ask every night while we were on our trip if we could go home so he could do just that), wants "yo-yurt and crunchies" for breakfast every day, will play with the same toys unless I hide them for varitey's sake, and NEVER fails to request his favorite Bible story before bed.

"Mommy, I want Lu-li-lif."  (As in David and Goliath if you aren't up on your "Caleb-ese")

All we have to do these days is open the toddler Bible and give him a few key words per page.  He knows the rest of the story.  I love his pronunciations of it all, but especially the line, "I come fight you in de name of Dod!"

And he also loves to act out the story.   Many, many times a day.  Caleb is David, and Ian is Goliath.  There is a required dialogue and if Ian strays from it, Caleb will correct him with what he is supposed to say.  So adorably cute.

The part that has us in stitches?  After the main part of the story, Caleb will start to sway the top part of his body from the waist up and then yell, "trow tone!"  (throw stone)  For a while we couldn't figure out why he was swaying so.  And then it occurred to me that every time we've let the kids watch the DVD player in the van recently, Caleb has managed to convince his sisters to watch Veggie Tales, Dave and the Giant Pickle (Link to part 3 included here ~ the fight scene starts at about minute 3 of the clip).  And Junior Asparagus (who plays David) doesn't have any arms to throw with, so the slingshot is at the tip of his asparagus spear head and she swings around to give it momentum.

Perhaps the sweetest part of his whole obsession with David and Goliath is his desire to read a Bible story before he sleeps.  And sometimes he even falls asleep holding his favorite book.

And now I'll ask for some suggestions from those of you with slightly older kiddos.  They have loved the Beginner's Bible for Toddlers, but now are ready for just a bit more detail in the stories.  And they are definitely not ready for a grown up Bible, or even a regular children's Bible just yet.  What Bible do your preschoolers love?

First time commenter :) Is "commenter" a word?
Anyway...check out the "Big Picture Bible" it is AMAZING!!!! It's very short stories and too the point, and shows the "Big Picture" because it relates everything to each other, in chronological order. Amazon.com has it. My girls LOVE it!

Have you checked out the Jesus Story Book Bible?

The Tongginator has The Beginner's Bible: Timeless Children's Stories by Karyn Henley. It's a best-seller, but I wouldn't recommend it. It seems best for ages six and up when it comes to reading level, but the stories lack depth. I'm not a huge fan. Just my two yuan.

That's Anne Marie's favortie Bible too!! We take it in our little purse every Sunday!! You'll have to let me know what people suggest to you about "the next step up Bible"!

Well 2 of your commenters have beat me to it, I see. I HIGHLY recommend the Big Picture Story Bible AND the Jesus Storybook Bible. We have both and love them. The Big Picture Bible does just what it says~ it shows the "big picture." And the Jesus storybook bible points continually to Jesus. You can also get the "Jesus" Bible with a companion CD. I would say, go get both of these Bibles. You can't go wrong.

Hey Kristi!
My kiddos have read this one so much that it is TEARING UP! I had to look and look on the internet to find it....
http://www.familychristian.com/shop/product.asp?prodID=13122
It's called the Read and Learn Bible and it has a blue cover. (Even though our cover ripped off a long time ago, we still call it the "Blue Bible"!) It goes through each Bible story chronologically, in more detail than the toddler Bible (we have that one too) and also it goes through ALL the Old and New Testament stories. I love it for Kimmie, Quan, and Candie! They can't wait for each new story!
I love that Caleb has such a hunger for God's Word!

P.S. It's big and long with 500 pages, but EVERY page has a GREAT illustration. I think that's why my kiddos love it so much!

Loved it and I knew exactly why Caleb was swaying, ha, so cute! Eli loves these too. All our kiddos have gone through the Adventure Bibles, they have the Early Reader and the Young Reader as well as just the "regular" Adventure Bible. My big boys liked them .. well, Spencer still uses his Tyler has moved on. Anyhow we love em!

I like the "Day by Day" kids Bible (for older kiddos) and the "Day by Day" beginning to read Bible.
I like that my older kiddos are reading through the Bible in a year and this goes along with the idea that its good to read daily. I like the "habit" idea.
Both are by Karyn Henley

This is one that we just got and my Jay who is 7 loves the stories. It is for mother's and sons. It has a section after each story that talks about how to grow up to be a man of God and a section on how to help your son become that man-I even love it. Gabe gets some of the story, but he will get there in time.

There is one for mother's and daughters also:

What a sweet post! My husband David also loved the story of David and Goliath as a boy - might have had something to so with the hero being named David! I love, love, how you are able to capture what Caleb says and that you can write it how it sounds like he is saying it - you'r eamazing. That Caleb is just a heart breaker and it is so very sweet to see him asleep with his bible. Precious.

Couldn't resist commenting on this one. I've followed your blog since your family brought Darcy home as our daughter is also from Hangzhou, and you are a lovely family.
Jesus Storybook Bible (every story whispers his name).
My kids LOVE it. We use it at church in our preschool ministry also (alongside the Beginner's Bible).
It is also beautifully illustrated, and Caleb would LOVE the huge illustration of Goliath! It's a complete hit with all little boys. Wild at Heart stuff, for sure.

He is so cute! We have a few of those books too though they are little long for Noah right now. At his adoption hearing, someone gave us the Jesus Storybook Bible (http://www.amazon.com/Jesus-Storybook-Bible-Every-Whispers/dp/0310708257/ref=pd_sim_b_37). I read it to him every day when he was a newborn and I loved it. Its too long for him right now but you might want to check it out at a bookstore to see if you think its age appropriate for your kids.

Kristi,

I know this is an old post but I have been trying to find a Bible for Emmi, we had The Beginner's Bible for the older three but I have heard that the new version isn't as good as the one printed 20 years ago. What did you decide on and how are your three enjoying it?
