Remind me again why I buy toys!

Toys prove over and over again to be over rated in making children happy. For those of you that are going to be parents soon, please do yourself a favor and save your money. If you have belts, shoes, empty (of course cleaned out) coffee creamer bottles and yogurt cups and a laundry basket you may never need to invest in Fisher Price or Playskool...

Want proof? Thursday night this was the scene in our house.

"Hode on tite Kay-ub!"
"Do we bof fit?"

I guess Friday morning they did show that sometimes toys are a fun addition to the laundry basket.
Friday was Adoption Day and we haven't decided if in the future we will celebrate Family Day or Adoption Day. Eventually we'll let Kylie decide (and Caleb too for that matter) but this year we decided to again celebrate both. We were on the road to visit family because Ian had a CCC board meeting Saturday morning. On the way we tried to stop at my favorite college haunt (The Blue Ribbon Diner in Burlington) but it was way too crowded, so we ended up at the Chick-fil-A at the mall where I had worked in college. Ian told Kylie that I used to work there and then she looked at me and said, "Mommy, you work here when you was in college?" I answered yes and her reply was, "Oh yeah, I bemember when you work here!" So funny.

On our way back to the car we passed the Great American Cookie company and it was adoption day...

Kylie ~ "Hey, look at my special Dop-chun Day teet!"

Caleb ~ "Hey, can I get another one of these?"

Yes, we let them eat their cookies in the car, we were trying to get to Mama's before 10pm. No, a potty emergency kept us from making it...
Why is it that Kylie is perfectly happy to peepee in her pull-up at home (even though we have incentives to use the potty in action), but insists in stopping to peepee in a potty when we are in the middle of nowhere on the highway?

If Kylie is anything like Maggie, she's gotta check ALL the potties out! There might be something interesting in there!

I am right there with you on the Blue Ribbon thing. We try to have a meal there whenever we are in Burlington. Of course, we have to save room for the greatest dessert ever - a Haw River Mud!! :-)

I'm with Traci, who knew? I thought those were lollipops.

Um, Caleb's mouth is a wee bit yucky.

It's so true about the toys, isn't it? There's probably only a few toys in our house that would be missed if they disappeared.

Too cute and AMEN, SISTER! And it's not like you can say, "Oh, just go ahead and pee in your pants this time..."

What? No Cracker Barrel?

And for Caleb, prepare for the future. Just buy Legos. Lots and lots and lots and lots of Legos. And prepare to step over the dang things for the rest of your natural life. And prepare for there to be much gnashing of teeth over whose Legos they are...cue Caroline, who loves them dearly, too. But don't touch her piles of paper and stickers and crayons and notebooks.

Hey Kristi - I love it! And we have learned that being here Matthew doesn't need a lot of toys! It's amazing what some toilet paper, receipts, and empty water bottles have done for us in the hotel room! Love the pictures. It looks like they are getting along great in the pictures - I love your traditions for Adoption Day! I am taking notes for next year!

Same here -- They seem to have fun w/ many things from the kitchen. Just take them outside w/ rice/beans and a few measuring cups and watch how long they stay playing with that!!

Oh, that is our house too!!! If its an empty box, old wheel from the polaris, empty toilet paper roll the its a fun toy!! But the closet full of toys goes untouched! I have to agree with Tricia...Caleb's mouth looks.....YUMMY!!!

Kristi,

I think you have just asked one of the questions that has plagued mankind for ages-- or at least since the first road trip!!

And I'm right there with ya on the toys. Honestly, we buy them as much for me to play with-- with AK of course-- as for her.

Loved the photos of the laundry baskets and both Kylie and Caleb playing in them. You have only been a Mom for a few years but have wisdom beyond your time! I sent my oldest off to college and it is amazing the "stuff" we buy that doesn't mean one darn thing to them. Keep posting as it always brings delight and a smile to my soul to hear how your family is doing.
