Reflections

There were two things about my dad that still make me laugh today. One was that he had a serious weakness for ice cream. Even though he had a heart attack when he was in his early 40's and quickly had double bypass surgery following that, he never did quite give up that sweet vice. There were many times when I'd visit him in Maine over the summers that we'd stop for ice cream not once, but twice in one day! Dad would just say with a twinkle in his eye, "There's always room for ice cream!" And while Kylie never met dad, I think they had a lot in common...

The other thing was Dad's attraction to trees. I'm serious, I can't tell you how many times over the years Dad would pull over when we were in the car for us to stop and admire a unique tree. And many times we'd have to wait minutes or even an hour or two for the lighting to be just right so that he could photograph it... (But his dedication to conservation, lighting, and nature got a beautiful book, To Save a River published before he died) Anyway, when Alexander, Kylie and I were walking around Reed Gold Mine last week I suddenly remembered a spot Dad used to like to visit while we were there. And so I set off determined to find the tree. (It is one of the only surviving trees from the days that the gold mine was in operation). And the three of us sat on the bench and admired it just like Dad used to. This time it was my turn to explain the specialness of the tree with Alexander. And I couldn't help but remember the many times I sat there with Dad.

I think he would have been proud...

I have been reading your blog for about a year now (my son used to go to the preschool and I got the link from one of the emails they sent out). It is a daily ritual for me to come and find out what you guys are doing each day. I enjoy the pictures and the way you are documenting Kylie's life and wish that I had been that detailed when my boys were growing up. Your blogs are detailed enough that one day Kylie will never question anything about her life. There have been several times when I have wanted to comment, but felt as an outsider, I shouldn't....but today reading your blog about your dad, literally sent shivers down my spine. How awesome is it that you were able to share a piece of your dad with your brother AND your daughter. I am sure your dad would be grateful and proud. Thank you for sharing your life, it puts alot of things into perspective and my husband and I and our kids are also now trying to spend Sundays relaxing and not running around. I envy your lazy Sunday afternoons :-) We have found a church after almost 2 years of living here and we are beginning to study the bible. I wish I had given my kids the gift of Christ as a constant in their lieves as small children, as you are to Kylie, but I can't go back....So I move forward and pray that my sons one day live their life to glorify God. I would love to see your dad's book, do you know if it is any libraries?

What a wonderful moment for Alex and Kylie. I remember that tree so well. Remember our trip out West and all of the "look at THAT tree"?! Memories can sustain us.
I'm proud that you are making them for Kylie and Alex.
