the way to Holden

Ian and I had the sobering recognition over Christmas break that time with all our chicks in the nest was running ever so short.  Sure, eight years until the oldest heads off to college appears to be a long time on the surface, but we're realizing more and more how time is fleeting.

And for that reason we've decided to be more intentional, carving out times for our family to "chill" together.  For several years we carried on with life as usual over spring break with Ian working, but with the new insight that eight more spring breaks were all we had left, we decided to make the most of that time the kids had off from school.

Thankfully we have good friends who own a beach house down at Holden, so we are able to rent their beautiful home for part of the week at a pro-rated price instead of having to pay for nights that we wouldn't be there.

Of course we were excited about our time down at their place because chill time at the beach is always great.

But this trip we had a fun little bonus.

Along with my boisterous bunch we got to see my college roomie and her daughter (our goddaughter) and our goddaughter's best friend.

We may have had a bit of a shock of realizing our friendship now goes back 25 years...

In all seriousness, the kids happily searched for fossils while we caught up,

As time with Beth and her crew always does, it flew by and before we knew it, it was time to catch our ferry from Ft. Fisher over to Southport on our way down to Holden.

We were sad to say our "until next times" but glad to be one step closer to our days of rest at the coast.
