[And for parents whose family includes one or more boys, the greatest challenge may be just keeping them alive through childhood and adolescence.] ~ Dr. James Dobson
Two years, four months, and one day ago (Caleb's forever family day) I did not understood what that excerpt from bringing up BOYS by Dr. Dobson was talking about. Two years and four months ago (the next day) I had a better idea...
There was also a time when I used to secretly laugh at the husband of one of my dear friends every time he would shake his head somewhat in disbelief and say, "Son!" to their only male child. In my mind I couldn't figure out how he could forget his son's name from time to time.
These days I hear myself often saying, "Son!" in the exact same tone of voice to my own little boy while expressing my disbelief in yet another death defying stunt he's pulling off. (I understand now Jon...I really do...And I apologize for giggling at you behind your back. Forgive me?)
Honestly. I had no idea what people were getting at when they told me that having a boy was going to change my life. He's a good kid. He's got a heart of gold. He puts the "snug" in the word snugglebug! Sure he knows how to irritate his sisters like no one else on the planet, but I love him around the earth and back and to the moon and back and to the sun and back and to the comet and back and to the...(you get the picture, it's a game he and I play daily).
But if I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times. He's impulsive. And he's fast. And those two things stirred together often create a perfect storm.
Lucky for him, just when the last of the hairs on my head are turning grey as I witness him cheat the grim reaper once again, he usually realizes that it's time to stop making mommy's heart race. He'll start "the apology" by flashing one of his long perfected grins.
And if he thinks about it, he'll toss in one of his little wink moves along with an, "I love you mommy!"
Which typically leaves me undone. And makes me wonder what my heart condition will be like when I have TWO boys to keep out of the ER...
Oh, and about the wink move. Apparently it works pretty well with his female friends too...

What a fun post! The girl with the purse IS a doll. I LOVE the look on Caleb's face as he stands next to her. What a charmer he must be!
Very true. With our three boys we've had our heart attack moments and many ER trips, yet those long eyelashes and great hugs make up for all of the mischief :)
Oh, I LAAAAAUUUUUUGGGGGHHHHEEEDDD reading this one! I will share with Jon! And just so you know, Mickey asks frequently if we can get him a brother from China after we adopt Mary-Kate.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
You're not alone. I have a sneaky little feeling God's gonna make me eat THAT chuckle someday.
Luckily, we have a very safety-conscious boy. I think if I had one who was "all boy," I'd be having heart attacks along with you. BUT, he likes the ladies, and older ones, too! What are we going to do with these boys when they turn 16??? Yikes!
EEK! I'm scared for what the future brings with my little man! LOL! Caleb is such a cutie!
I love that sweet boy! And he and Holden make quite the pair!! Holden needed stiches the first time at about 18 months, climbing (of course!). And when he could unlock all the door locks and open the door to set off the alarm early in the am at two - I knew I was in for a adventurous ride. :0) I can't wait to see the 'dynamic duo' in action though, and neither can Holden! :0)
SO SO SO true, and oh does it make my heart feel good to know that this is all "normal" behavior boys have! We are awaiting the first ER visit ourselves, it's amazing to me how they have no fear, you get mad, and then they make your heart melt again. LOVE this post my friend!
This is so true! BTW, love Dobson's book on boys. I found Grant the other day standing ON TOP of the shed! YIKES!! They scare me. Having a tomgirl around just makes it worse!
Amen Sister!!

Oh my goodness do you have a charmer or WHAT?! He is ADORABLE! That third photo just really gets to me. And yes, believe me I have MEMORIZED that quote from Dr. Dobson having 3 boys ourselves (sigh.) And my husband doesn't help the situation thinking they are too reserved most times ... I think the quote is directed primarily at mothers as we're usually the ones picking up the pieces! I'm sure you'll do great with 2 boys ... sometimes one will keep the other one out of trouble. (the rest of the time makes sure to keep an eye on them.) :-)
he is the cutest little thing ever! I feel you on the boys thing. My middle wild child Rog would climb up walls and everything else he could scale. Oh and he is totally a ladies man too :)
Love the quote by Dr. Dobson. So, so true!
Boys are "noise covered with dirt." haha
BUT, I also agree with you-- they are so sweet and so snuggly. And often not as "complicated" and dramatic as little girls tend to be (at least at our house!)
Caleb will have so much fun with his brother!!!
hehehe....love this post! I love the picture of Caleb winking! Can't wait!!!!

What a wonderful post. HIs wink is amazing! Love that one of him and 'the one with the purse'.
OH MY GOSH!!! The pictures w/ "the one with the purse".... his face is PRICELESS!!!!!!!
Oh I feel your pain... however it is usually Maylin who is pulling the death defying stunts! :)
Love the picture of he and "the one with the purse"!
I love your pictures. It's so true, the most challenging thing is keeping them safe. They are convinced that they are invincible. But, even though you might not always be #1 girl, you'll always be Mom, and that's just as wonderful.
