Taking flight

With Ian's dad working during the day, we had planned to go into DC to introduce Darcy to our nation's capital while we were visiting.  Insert monsoon rain and therefore daytime entertainment plan B...

We needed a place indoors that would captivate the minds of our kids AND free is always nice.  With those criteria in mind, we hedged our bets on the

and luckily it did not disappoint.  Just the promise of seeing all kinds of planes had the kids giddy with excitement before we ever stepped foot in the airplane hanger turned museum.

There are hundreds of planes on display, ranging from one-seater kit planes, stunt planes, war planes, commercial planes, and even all sorts of rockets and spaceships.  My four kids (can't forget the 36 year old one...) loved every minute from the first plane they stopped to check out
to the Space Shuttle Enterprise that we saved for last.
Ian even got to hold a heat shield ceramic tile that was taken off one of the other space shuttles upon its re-entry into our atmosphere.  The scientific part of my hubby thought it was pretty cool!
I have to admit that I held it and thought it was pretty cool too.  Funny how when I was a little girl the space shuttle program got such attention and over the years we have almost totally lost interest as a nation.  And the "nerdy, sci-fi" lover in me was totally diggin' this mail box.  Could have something to do with the fact that the first movie I recall seeing in a theatre was Star Wars.  As in the original one.  Yeah, I'm that old...
The phone booth is pretty cool too, but R2D2 rocks!

While the parking fee of $15 stinks, the National Air and Space Museum Annex gets a "ten thumbs up" for DC area, rainy day entertainment from our family!

That looks so cool! Even though I grew up close to DC, I've never been!

What??!! No frisking from the security guards for sunblock?! And where's the parking lot brouhaha? Sigh...it's just not the same without us...

So glad u enjoyed yourselves. We live not too far from D.C. If u ever go again, and want company, give us a shout! As far as parking, Your best bet is to park in a suburb and use the subway. Very easy and nice.....and cheap! We often do this when we go to Baltimore since its cheaper than parking and the kids love "riding the train!"

You guys were only about 30 min. from our house. Next time you are up and need a place to burn some energy swing by here. We have playgrounds and trails galore. Would love to have you any time. Glad that you had such a wonderful time.
