"Hey Mama, what does..."

"...(fill in the blank here) mean?"

I bet I hear those words fifty or so times a day.  Darcy's English hasn't progressed to the point that she's asking just yet, so it all comes from my "older kiddos."  (I still giggle to myself when I refer to Kylie and Caleb as "older."  They are after all a whopping five months ~ Caleb ~ and 364 days ~ Kylie ~ older than their mei mei).

And of those fifty times, probably about ten come from my precious son.  Mostly when he's being disciplined.  Which seems to happen A LOT these days.  But that's material for a whole 'nother post...

Which leaves the rest of the "what does that mean" coming from my big girl.  And she's not asking just to drive me crazy, though I'll admit from time to time it sorta feels like she is.

Take yesterday for instance.  She was standing in her bathroom on her little stool facing the mirror so I could administer her trademark "stand up pony."  As I'm combing her hair she catches my eyes in the mirror and asks, "Hey Mama, when we say grace before we eat and it says, 'thank you for our blessings,' what does that mean?"

I started with an explanation of blessings and then started to give some examples.  "For example, some of our blessings are that we have a house to sleep in and clothes to wear.  And when we sit down at the table, we are blessed with food to eat and things to drink.  Does that make sense?"

She gave me a thoughtful look and said yes.  Then she was quiet while I finished her hair and put a clip on her pony.  I figured that meant she had understood and the conversation was over.

Then as we were getting ready to walk out of the bathroom she says, "So that's sorta like the song you sing us when we go to bed (All in All) where it says 'when I am dry you fill my cup?'  Because having drink in our cup is having a blessing that God gives us?"

Hmm, well, not exactly what it means in the context of that song, but pretty impressive connection.

That's my Ky.  Always listening, always asking, always making connections.  I love how her mind works!

I just love my 'oldest' so much - her mind is just amazing. What a privilege to observe and be part of her growth. And my two 'youngest' just bowl me over too. I am so blessed to be their grandma.

I love this. I forgot to tell you that Monday night, she was playing with my phone and somehow ended up on the stock tracking app (which I never use). She asked me what it was. I told her those were stocks. She asked,"What are stocks?" Now, how do I explain that to a 4-year-old? So cute. I just told her that they were kinda complicated to explain... I figure stocks might be a bit too abstract for her just yet. =)

Wow, that is so awesome!!! When kids make connections like that, it just blows me away! It is so cool to watch their little brains work. This morning, Noah made the connection between the ceiling fan and the light switch which blew me away. I can't wait to hear the connections he'll make when he's older! That Kylie is a pretty special girl!
